We had a tradition growing up that involved us having to find our baskets full of goodies on Easter morning. And our parents were clever in where they hid them. None of the obvious “hidden in plain sight” kind of places. I like to think that they never took it easy on us on purpose. Kind of a “life ain’t gonna be easy, so get acquainted with the idea” attitude. Which is why if Mindy found my basket, she didn’t tell me where it was. And if I found Zack’s basket … tough stuff small dude.
It was each man for himself in our house. Until a point.
You see, the other part of the tradition was that we weren’t allowed to touch anything in our baskets until all three of us kids had our own baskets in our possession. So we’d basically sit there drooling over the peeps stuck to the plastic grass, count how many gross black jelly beans were visible, and decide which piece of mouth watering chocolate would be devoured first, all while harassing Zack. “Come on! Hurry up! Where all have you looked?!”
But one year in particular it was taking a little too long. So we gave in and decided finding Zack’s basket should be a team effort. Our parents sat back and continued with their smug grins as we canvassed and pretty much wreaked havoc trying to find that damn basket.
Until finally we gave up. After the barrage of “Have you looked in the ______?” questions from our parents and our affirmative answers, I remember our parents exchanging a quick glance. It was kind of a confused look.
So off they went. In search of an Easter basket that neither one of them could remember where it was hidden.
Eventually they found it. I think it might have been in the dryer. I don’t really remember. But I do remember that being the one year that we searched together. And the one year we were willing to share our loot while our parents went on a “recon” mission to find the MIA basket.
Ahhh, good times.
Be sure to check out the Virtual Bunny Trail Hershey’s is creating and check out some of their new goodies. I was oh so fortunate to be able to customize my very own basket with the fine Hershey’s people at BlissDom. And you want to know the best part? I was able to put together a totally rockin basket sans peanut butter! (Remember my peanut butter eulogy?) That basket will be arriving on our doorstep shortly and I can’t wait.
So tell us, are you a basket hiding family? Have you ever forgotten where one was hidden? And most importantly, what’s your favorite Easter treat?
